forlorn is a short film a friend of mine created during the 2024 spring semester. Since it was going to be showcased in the fall of 2024 in celebration of a student film project being completed for our club, he asked if I could design a poster for the movie.Only being provided an image taken on an iPhone, I was told to go for a darker red theme and take creative liberty from there. I ended up using Photoshop to simplify the background, play with the cropping, and toy with the red hues. It turned out to be a simple yet effective final piece!
During the fall 2024 semester I ended up taking a typography class. One of the projects we had to complete was recreating an album cover, jacket, with a predominately typographic approach. I ended up redesigning All Time Low's album Don't Panic. Their music is known for being up-beat and fast paced, so it only felt appropriate to use that approach when designing.Despite Don't Panic telling you to do just that, it makes you want to do the complete opposite!
When I'm not designing for class, I love to draw! I had a lot of free time over the summer to work on personal projects, this being one of them. Paint Tool SAI is my go-to program for digital drawing, so I made a cartoon-ified version of myself to use as a profile picture for online spaces like Discord and YouTube. I created transparent PNG sprites of the same cartoon look of myself as well.
This is one of my first full project stop motion animation projects. In my typography class, we were given a project to choose a word with multiple meanings and create an animation of it primarily focusing on the typographic choices of the word. I used the word jam and attempted to convey it in three ways: traffic jam, music jam, and jam-jam!
A unique project I was given was to create a design for a pin for out film production club StudioU. After being told it was going to be a film reel, I designed the actual icon in Illustrator and created a mockup in Photoshop to present to the other people apart of the leadership board. After I was given some feedback and made adjustments, I sent the design to custompins.com to have manufactured. The image below the mockup is the physical button displayed on my backpack.
I work as an office assistant and graphic designer for the University of Minnesota's Career Service Administration. A responsibility of mine is being the head OA for creating content for Handshake's content feed feature. Similar to LinkedIn, you can create text posts; images; or short videos for people on Handshake to check out. Since I'm also responsible for delegating content to other OAs to create, I tend to be the one who makes short videos.I make nearly all of them in Canva. UMN's Career Service Administration has a branding kit I can use while also utilizing creative freedom to make fun themes for each video. In this particular one, I went more for a scrapbook feel to it. Since I started creating these in April 2024, it's been a great way to try a different medium of design while also learning and providing useful career tips!
One of the responsibilities I have as a graphic designer for career services is to create and send a bi-weekly newsletter called Career Backpack. We write ten captions to pair with five graphics with various information about the U of M's career services! This graphic was made in Illustrator for an article featured in the newsletter that encourages students to send a follow-up thank you email after talking to an employer at a career fair. Branding is very important to the University of Minnesota, so we are encouraged to use the hex color codes, fonts, and logos that the university provides.
During the fall, I took my first-ever web design class and fell in love with it. In the semester, we created a project where you had to re-create a mobile e-commerce app entirely in Figma. I was able to learn more about auto-layout and the importance of using columns and rows when it comes to creating a web interface. After a lot of work, it was rewarding to see all of my work come together in one cohesive "app".Check out the prototype here!
In the same web design class, I was able to get my first taste in formatting using HTML and CSS. Similar to using Figma, it became something that I really enjoyed. Similar to our Figma project, we were instructed to re-create an event website page only using HTML and CSS. I ended up choosing When We Were Young Festival as my event re-designed a few tabs!Visit the website here!NOTE: The only two pages I recreated was the "Home" and "About" page since we were only required to create two pages due to time constraints. Every other link works, but they send you to the original WWWY website instead.
